Laura Shinn, 57, Killed in Balboa Park DUI Crash on Pershing Drive
SAN DIEGO, CA (July 21, 2021) – Laura Shinn was killed after a DUI crash on Pershing Drive in the Balboa Park neighborhood.
The San Diego Union-Tribune identified the 57-year-old woman as the victim of the fatal collision which occurred on Tuesday morning.
The incident happened when Laura Shinn was riding a bicycle northbound on Pershing Drive in Balboa Park. At the same time, a 2011 Prius was traveling in the same direction.
Police said the man driving the Prius then swerved into a bike lane, just south of Morley Field Disc Golf Course. In the process, the car then struck the bicyclist from behind.
Bicycle Rider Hit by Car
Firefighters along with the paramedics soon arrived at the scene and found her unresponsive on the ground. Laura Shinn sustained serious injuries as a result of the Balboa Park crash.
Medical personnel rushed the cyclist to a hospital, where she later died. The accident took place on July 20 at about 7:30 a.m.
Meanwhile, police determined that the driver was under the influence when he hit the bicycle rider. They arrested and booked him into jail on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
Reports indicated that the victim was as an architect who supervised the planning and design of several San Diego State University facilities. The Balboa Park DUI crash is still under investigation.
