1 Seriously Injured in Santa Barbara County Crash on Highway 101 Near Gaviota Tunnel
SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, CA (October 3, 2021) – A DUI crash seriously injured at least one person on Highway 101 near Gaviota Tunnel.
According to the California Highway Patrol dispatch team, the accident occurred on Sunday evening. Officers reported the wreck at about 7:17 p.m. in the Gaviota area.
The incident began when a white GMC Sonoma was swerving and driving recklessly on northbound Highway 101, just south of the Gaviota Tunnel. The pickup truck then sideswiped a silver Honda Civic in the process.
2 Cars Collide
Firefighters along with the paramedics arrived at the scene and found one person who sustained major injuries as a result of the collision.
Medical personnel soon took the patient to a hospital for treatment. Officials did not disclose the name of the wounded party and their condition at this time.
Meanwhile, CHP believed that the driver of the GMC was under the influence of alcohol when they hit the other car. The collision is still under investigation.
Officers forced the northbound lanes of Highway 101 to shut down near the Gaviota Tunnel following the crash.
