LONG BEACH, CA (July 29, 2022) – A pedestrian crash killed a boy near Lakewood Boulevard and 23rd Street in Long Beach.
According to the KTLA News and NBC Los Angeles, the tragic accident took place on Tuesday evening. Officers reported the collision shortly before 5:30 p.m.
The incident happened on July 26 when a child and his father were crossing Lakewood Boulevard eastbound on 23rd Street. At the same time, a Dodge Ram was going west on 23rd Street.
Driver Arrested After Crash
The pickup truck then tried to make a left turn onto southbound Lakewood. In the process, the car failed to yield to the victims in the marked south crosswalk.
Long Beach police said the Dodge then struck the 7-year-old boy who had the right of way. Firefighters along with the paramedics arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, police affirmed that the man driving the pickup stopped and stayed at the site after hitting the boy. They soon arrested him on suspicion of felony vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence.
Officers forced Lakewood Boulevard to shut down between Stearns and Willow streets for a time following the incident. The cause of the fatal Long Beach crash is still under investigation.
