3 Children Seriously Injured in Antioch Pedestrian Crash at Manzanita and Sycamore
ANTIOCH, CA (September 16, 2022) – A car and pedestrian crash left several children injured at Manzanita Way and Sycamore Drive in Antioch.
According to The Mercury News and The Press, the accident took place on Friday afternoon. Officers reported the collision at about 3:23 p.m.
The incident began when a Mercury Mystique going west on Sycamore Drive was waiting to make a left turn onto Manzanita Way in Antioch.
At the same time, a Chevrolet Impala left the Sycamore Square traveling at a high rate of speed west. The Chevrolet then tried to pass the Mercury.
Speeding Driver Hits Students
Police said the Impala slammed into the Mystique and then careened into the three children walking in the area. The young students sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision.
An air ambulance took one to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital -Oakland and the other to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. The reports listed them in critical condition.
A ground ambulance rushed the third child to John Muir Medical Center – Walnut Creek. The driver of the Mercury ended up hospitalized with minor wounds.
Police added that the speeding motorist survived the incident with major injuries. A helicopter flew the patient to a hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, officers forced the corner of Manzanita and Sycamore to shut down for a time following the wreck. The cause of the Antioch crash is still under investigation.
