Caleb Chavez, 23, Seriously Injured in Porterville Fatal Crash on Highway 65
PORTERVILLE, CA (August 6, 2021) – Caleb Chavez was seriously injured after a fatal crash on Highway 65 in Porterville.
The California Highway Patrol identified the 23-year-old man as one of the victims of the collision which took place on Friday.
The incident began when Caleb Chavez was riding as a passenger in a 2003 Honda going south on Highway 65 in Porterville.
At the same time, a 2014 International carrying diesel tank and a 2021 GMC were going the same direction. For an unknown reason, a tire of the semi-truck failed.
CHP said the International slammed into the guardrail, became disabled and blocked both lanes of the highway near Morton Avenue.
Man, 21, Killed in Semi-Truck Collision
Both the GMC and the Honda then collided with the left rear of the truck. The impact pushed the semi into the center median and caused fuel to spill.
The 21-year-old man driving the Honda died due to the impact of the collision. Caleb Chavez sustained major injuries as a result of the Porterville crash.
Paramedics rushed him to the Kaweah Delta Medical Center for treatment. FOX 26 News and ABC 30 News wrote that the accident occurred at around 3:12 a.m.
Meanwhile, an air ambulance took the driver of the GMC to the same hospital with major injuries. CHP forced both southbound lanes of Highway 65 to shut down for hours following the wreck.
The cause of the tragic collision is still under investigation.
