DUI Driver Daniel Avilan-Tirado, 40, Causes Westley Fatal Crash
STANISLAUS COUNTY, CA (April 21, 2021) – Authorities detained Daniel Avilan-Tirado for DUI after causing a fatal crash near Westley.
The California Highway Patrol determined that the 40 year-old Stockton man was under the influence of drugs when the accident occurred on Wednesday.
The incident began when Daniel Avilan-Tirado was driving a red sedan and swerving across both lanes of the Interstate 5 in Westley.
An operator of a big rig saw him and boxed him in with his trailer, south of Howard Road. CHP said in the process, two more semi-trucks traveling behind them also stopped.
Elpidio Ramirez Tovar, 41, Killed in Interstate 5 Collision
Elpidio Ramirez Tovar failed to stop his tractor-trailer and then struck the back of the big rig ahead of him. The impact pushed the rear-ended truck into the tractor in front.
The 41-year-old Five Points man ended up thrown from the cab and landed on the east shoulder of the I-5. The Modesto Bee reported the collision at around 1 a.m.
Firefighters along with the paramedics arrived and pronounced Tovar dead at the scene. The driver of the big rig Tovar hit sustained minor wounds as a result of the wreck.
Meanwhile, authorities soon arrested Daniel Avilan-Tirado on suspicion of DUI. The deadly crash and the DUI arrest are still under investigation.
