David Cortez, 39, Killed in Bakersfield Crash at White Lane and Hughes Lane
BAKERSFIELD, CA (May 16, 2022) – A DUI crash killed David Cortez at White Lane and Hughes Lane in Bakersfield.
The coroner’s office identified the 39-year-old Wasco man as the victim of the fatal collision which took place on Friday.
The incident happened when David Cortez was driving a Toyota Camry in the area of White Lane and Hughes Lane in Bakersfield.
At the same time, a reckless driver was traveling in a BMW near South H Street and Planz Road. Police said they lost sight of that car a short time later.
Christian Valencia, 25, Arrested For DUI
The suspect, 25-year-old Christian Valencia, then ran a red light at a high rate of speed. In the process, he struck the Toyota Camry at the intersection of White and Hughes.
David Cortez died at the scene of the crash. The Kern Golden Empire and Bakersfield Californian wrote that the wreck occurred on May 13 at around 12:30 a.m.
Meanwhile, Christian Valencia survived the accident with moderate injuries. Paramedics took him to the hospital for treatment.
Police arrested and booked the Arvin man into the Kern County jail on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter. The Bakersfield crash is still under investigation.
