Diego Cachua, 25, ID’d as Suspect in San Bernardino Fatal DUI Hit-and-Run Crash
SAN BERNARDINO, CA (October 4, 2021) – Authorities detained Diego Cachua after a fatal DUI hit-and-run crash in San Bernardino.
Police determined that the 25-year-old San Bernardino man was under the influence of alcohol when he killed a pedestrian.
The incident began when Diego Eduardo Cachua was driving a car in the area of Rialto and Waterman avenues in San Bernardino.
Police said the driver then struck a pedestrian. The Press Enterprise wrote that the incident took place on Monday at about 2:17 a.m.
Pedestrian Hit and Killed by Car
Firefighters along with the paramedics arrived at the scene and found the victim down on the road. The person sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision.
Medical personnel then rushed the patient to the Loma Linda University Medical Center, where they died. The name of the deceased party has not been yet released pending notification of next of kin.
Meanwhile, police affirmed that Diego Cachua did not stop to render aid to the victim and fled the area. A witness saw and followed him south on Waterman and onto the westbound 10 Freeway.
The California Highway Patrol stopped the car on the 10 Freeway at Euclid Avenue. They arrested Diego Cachua on suspicion of DUI causing injury or death and hit-and-run causing injury or death.
Officers soon held him without bail at the Central Detention Center in San Bernardino. The San Bernardino DUI hit-and-run crash is still under investigation.
