Driver Killed in Collision Near Cannon Road
Carlsbad, CA (April 28, 2022) – Police arrested 51-year-old Douglas Lee Payne following a fatal crash accident that occurred on Interstate 5, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
On Wednesday, a Ford Explorer ended up disabled for an unknown reason on the right shoulder of the freeway. Preliminary investigation revealed the driver of the Explorer stepped out of his car and stood next to it.
The article published online mentioned an oncoming Honda Accord veered off the freeway and drove towards the direction of the disabled Ford Explorer. Due to the force from the impact, the Ford Explorer was pushed to strike the driver standing beside it. The collision resulted in fatal injuries to the victim. Authorities only identified the deceased as a resident of the Sun City neighborhood of Menifee in Riverside County.

Meanwhile, investigators mentioned the Accord driver appeared drunk at the time of the crash. Police eventually arrested Douglas Lee Payne on suspicion of several felony charges including DUI; and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
Further investigation on the case is ongoing.
