John Madarang, 39, ID’s as DUI Wrong-Way Driver in Los Angeles Fatal Crash
LOS ANGELES, CA (November 19, 2022) – Authorities detained John Madarang after a fatal DUI wrong-way crash in downtown Los Angeles.
Police determined that the 39-year-old Los Angeles man was under the influence of alcohol when the collision took place on Friday.
The incident began when Joseph Hansen Madarang was driving a silver Lexus IS200t west on 9th Street, an eastbound one-way street, in Los Angeles.
At the same time, two male pedestrians were walking across the intersection of 9th and Olive streets. Police said John Madarang then struck the two men in a marked crosswalk.
1 Killed, 1 Severely Injured in Collision
The Lexus continued and slammed head-on into another vehicle waiting at a red light. He failed to leave the scene after he collided with a passenger car and a tractor trailer in the area.
The two men hit by the Lexus went airborne and landed on the road. The KTLA News and NBC Los Angeles write that the accident occurred on November 18 at around 11:40 p.m.
Both victims, a 36-year-old man and a 32-year-old man, sustained severe injuries as a result of the incident. Paramedics rushed them to a hospital, where the older person died.
Meanwhile, police soon arrested John Madarang on suspicion of felony DUI following the crash. They booked him into jail in lieu of a $130,000 bail.
