Joseph Maez, 26, Kills Man in Wheelchair in Long Beach DUI Crash
LONG BEACH, CA (June 13, 2021) – Authorities detained Joseph Maez after a DUI crash that killed a man in a wheelchair in Long Beach.
Police determined that the 26-year-old Long Beach man was under the influence of alcohol when the fatal collision occurred on Saturday night.
The incident began when Joseph Maez was driving a 2016 Honda Civic west on Stearns Street in Long Beach. At the same time, the man in a wheelchair was crossing southbound on Radnor Avenue.
Police said the driver then struck the victim who was pushing a shopping cart full of his belongings in the unmarked crosswalk.

Firefighters along with the paramedics responded and pronounced the pedestrian in the wheelchair dead at the scene. His name remains unreleased pending notification of next of kin.
Meanwhile, police soon arrested Joseph Maez for DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. They set his bail at $100,000.
The Press Telegram and KTLA News the wrote that the accident took place on June 12 at about 11:19 p.m. The Long Beach DUI crash is still under investigation.
