NORWALK, California (March 9, 2017) — Leopoldo Leon, 32, has been charged with murder, DUI and hit-and-run resulting in death or serious injury following the death of one of two pedestrians he struck last Friday afternoon at 59th Place near Heliotrope Avenue in Maywood, according to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department.
The Walnut Park man is a previously convicted drunken driver from back in 2007 when he was caught with at least 0.08 blood-alcohol content while driving. He faces more serious charges because of this previous conviction and because this new incident involved the death of another person within 10 years of a previous DUI conviction. He faces up to 19 years to life in state prison if he is convicted of these charges, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office said.
Leon remains in jail where he is being held without bail as he awaits arraignment on March 28 at the Norwalk courthouse.
Jose Luis Lopez, 28, died at the hospital and his 24-year-old brother suffered minor injuries after they were struck by Leon’s vehicle. The suspect attempted to flee the scene, but he was caught by a Maywood city employee who held him until police got to the scene.
