TEHACHAPI, CA (June 10, 2021) – Authorities detained Manuel Gutierrez after a fatal wrong-way crash on Highway 58 near Tehachapi.
The California Highway Patrol said the Upland man killed one person and injured another in a wreck on Sunday.
The incident began when Manuel Gutierrez continued without stopping and tried to run over an officer in Barstow. The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on his blue 1999 Chevy Tahoe.
Manuel Gutierrez fled the Barstow area and drove through Tehachapi. He exited Highway 58 at Tehachapi Boulevard and went down several surface streets.
The man re-entered Highway 58 at Highway 202, traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes. At the same time, a 2010 Nissan Murano was going east.
