Matthew Gibbs, 19, Suspect in San Marcos Hit-and-Run Crash on State Route 78
SAN MARCOS, CA (March 4, 2022) – Officers detained Matthew Gibbs after a hit-and-run crash on State Route 78 in San Marcos.
The California Highway Patrol identified the 19-year-old Escondido man as the suspect in the wreck which took place on Thursday night.
The incident happened when Matthew Gibbs was driving a blue Honda Civic east on State Route 78 in San Marcos. For an unknown reason, he swerved to the left.
CHP said his car then struck a red Toyota Yaris traveling in the fast lane at the time. The two vehicles crashed east of Nordahl Road.
In the process, the Toyota rolled over and came to a rest on its roof. The San Diego Union-Tribune and FOX 5 News wrote that the accident occurred on February 3 at about 8:50 p.m.
2 Injured in Wreck
Firefighters along with the paramedics arrived at the scene. They found the two occupants of the overturned car who ended up hurt as a result of the collision.
The driver of the Yaris, a 38-year-old Valley Center woman, sustained major injuries. Her passenger, a 16-year-old Valley Center girl, survived with moderate injuries.
Medical personnel rushed both victims to a hospital for treatment. The reports did not disclose the names of the wounded patients and their condition at this time.
Meanwhile, CHP affirmed that the suspect abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot. They soon located and arrested him at his home.
Officers booked Matthew Gibbs into the Vista Detention Facility on suspicion of felony hit-and-run. The cause of the San Marcos hit-and-run crash is still under investigation.
