Michael Kelley, 32, ID’d as DUI Wrong-Way Driver in Nevada County Fatal Crash
NEVADA COUNTY, CA (November 30, 2021) – Officers identified Michael Kelley as the suspect in a fatal DUI wrong-way crash on the Interstate 80 in Nevada County.
The California Highway Patrol determined that the 32-year-old Antelope man was under the influence of alcohol when the wreck occurred on November 20.
The incident began when Michael Scott Kelley was driving a Jeep west on the eastbound Interstate 80 in Nevada County. At the same time, a Honda Civic was going east.
CHP said the wrong-way driver then slammed into the Honda head-on near Eagle Lakes Road. A third vehicle became involved in the process.
The man, woman and two children riding the Civic died in the accident. The coroner’s office identified the adults as Brittney Montano and Antonio Montano, both 29, from North Highlands.
4 Killed, 2 Injured in Wreck
An air ambulance took a 4-year-old boy riding the Honda to the Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno for treatment.
The male driver of the third car sustained moderate injuries due to the impact of the collision. Paramedics rushed him to the hospital for further aid.
The Sacramento Bee and KNCO News wrote that accident occurred at about 4:47 a.m. in the Sierra, near the Yuba Gap and Clear Lake areas.
Meanwhile, Michael Kelley survived with major injuries following the DUI crash. Medical personnel took him to the Reno hospital where he will be taken into custody once released.
He faces four counts of murder and four counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. The Nevada County DUI crash is still under investigation.
Records showed that the suspect was arrested in May of 2019 for misdemeanor DUI and sentenced to three years of probation.
