1 Killed, 2 Injured in Monterey County Crash on Highway 68 Near Spreckels
MONTEREY COUNTY, CA (August 15, 2022) – A DUI crash killed one person and injured two others on Highway 68 near Spreckels Boulevard in Monterey County.
According to The Monterey Herald and KION News, the tragic accident took place on Saturday evening. Officers reported the wreck on August 13 at about 6:10 p.m.
The incident happened when a black 2022 BMW 330i was going west in the No. 1 lane of Highway 68 east of Spreckels Boulevard in Monterey County.
At the same time, a red 2017 Toyota Camry was traveling east. For an unknown reason, the BMW crossed the two-way left turn lane and entered the eastbound No. 1 lane.
In the process, the BMW slammed into the Toyota. The California Highway Patrol said a 2022 Nissan Pathfinder behind the two cars struck debris from the collision.
DUI Driver Hits Another Car
The 48-year-old Salinas man driving the Camry died at the scene. His passenger sustained major injuries as a result of the accident.
Paramedics rushed the patient to a hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, the driver of the Nissan survived the incident with minor injuries.
CHP determined that he was under the influence when he hit the victims. They soon arrested him for DUI and vehicular manslaughter.
Officers forced the eastbound lanes of Highway 68 to shut down near Spreckels for a time following the wreck. The fatal Monterey County crash is still under investigation.
