DUI Driver in Ventura Fatal Car Crash ID’d as Nelson Rivas, 22
VENTURA, CA (June 20, 2021) – Authorities detained Nelson Rivas after a fatal DUI crash on Highway 101 in Ventura.
The California Highway Patrol determined that the 22-year-old man was under the influence when the wreck occurred on Sunday morning
The incident began when Nelson Rivas was driving a Nissan Sentra south on Highway 101 in Ventura. CHP said he lost control of the car and drove off the right side of the road.
The Nissan went about 40 to 50 feet down an embankment, just south of Victoria Avenue, in the process. The Sentra rolled over several times and caused a female occupant to be thrown from the vehicle.

Firefighters along with the paramedics pronounced the ejected person dead at the scene. A second female passenger of the Nissan sustained serious injuries following the collision.
Medical personnel took her to Ventura County Medical Center for treatment. Meanwhile, Nelson Rivas ended up hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
CHP soon arrested Nelson Rivas for felony gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and felony DUI alcohol causing injury.
Authorities booked him into the Ventura County Jail also for felony driving with a .08% blood-alcohol level causing injury. They set his bail at $55,000.
The Ventura County Star and KVTA News wrote that the wreck took place at around 4:20 a.m. The Ventura DUI crash is still under investigation.
