Jerilyn Spooner, 80, Killed; Gerald Nelson, 81, Arrested DUI Charges
Grass Valley, NEVADA COUNTY, Calif. (March 28, 2023) — A fatal crash at Brunswick Road and Highway 174 happened Monday afternoon in unincorporated Nevada County.
Jerilyn Spooner, 80, of Grass Valley, became trapped in her vehicle and died at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Grass Valley station.
The collision between the woman’s 2006 Mercedes and a Dodge 2500 pickup truck occurred around 3:10 p.m. on March 28th, according to the CHP and Fox 40 News. The pickup truck reportedly broadsided the Mercedes after the truck failed to navigate a sharp right curve in the roadway, police said.
Gerald Nelson, 81, of Colfax, was driving the pickup truck when it allegedly crossed the double yellow lines and entered the eastbound traffic lane. The truck hit the side of the Mercedes, causing the car to spin out while the Dodge continued traveling until it hit a metal pole and a street sign.
Sadly, Jerilyn Spooner suffered major injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Finally, police arrested Nelson on felony DUI charges. The case remains under investigation.
