Romero Castro, 28; Girl, 7, Killed in Pittsburg Crash on West Leland Road
PITTSBURG, CA (April 13, 2021) – A DUI crash killed Romero Castro and a child along West Leland Road in Pittsburg.
Police identified the 28-year-old man and the 7-year-old girl as the victims of the fatal accident which occurred on Monday evening.
The incident happened when Romero Castro was driving a Toyota Corolla east on West Leland Road in Pittsburg. He was traveling with a woman and three children in their car seats at the time.
Police said a Chevrolet Camaro traveling at a high rate of speed east then rear-ended the Toyota. The Corolla spun out of control and struck a tree, east of John Henry Johnson Parkway.
The three juvenile passengers ended up thrown from their car as a result of the collision. East Bay Times and CBS San Francisco reported the wreck on April 12 at about 6:03 p.m.
Christian Vargas, 25, Arrested For DUI
Firefighters along with the paramedics arrived and pronounced Romero Castro dead at the scene. His four passengers sustained serious injuries upon impact.
Medical personnel rushed them to a hospital, where the 7-year-old girl died. They also took the two passengers of the Chevrolet, including a 10-year-old child, for treatment of major injuries.
Police determined that the 25-year-old speeding driver, Christian Vargas, was under the influence of alcohol when the crash happened.
They arrested him on suspicion of felony gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, felony DUI resulting in bodily injury and probation violation.
Authorities soon booked him into the Martinez county jail. He was found to be on active court probation for a prior DUI conviction. The tragic Pittsburg crash is still under investigation.
