Ruth Wambusa, 38; and Gedion Mutuka, 43, Killed in Chino Hills Crash
CHINO HILLS, CA (March 20, 2023) – Ruth Wambusa and Gedion Mutuka were killed after a wrong-way crash on the 71 Freeway in Chino Hills.
The coroner’s office identified the Lake Elsinore residents as victims in the fatal wreck which took place on Sunday.
The incident happened when Ruth Mulisa Wambusa and Gedion Mbatha Mutuka were riding a 2018 Volvo south on the 71 Freeway in Chino Hills.
At the same time, a 2021 Volvo was traveling north in the southbound lanes. The California Highway Patrol said the 2021 Volvo struck their car, north of Chino Hills Parkway.
2 More Dead, 2 Injured in Wreck
Both vehicles spun out of control due to the impact of the collision. A 2001 Toyota and a 2008 Honda approached and then collided with the 2018 Volvo.
At least one vehicle became fully engulfed in flames as a result of the accident. The Daily Bulletin and FOX 11 News wrote that the wreck occurred on March 19 at around 2:30 a.m.
Ruth Wambusa, 38; and Gedion Mutuka, 43, died at the scene of the crash. Paramedics also pronounced the wrong-way driver and a passenger in the 2021 Volvo dead.
CHP added that two other motorists ended up hurt as a result of the incident. Meanwhile, CHP forced the southbound lanes of the 71 Freeway to shut down for several hours following the collision.
