Deadly Car Accident at West Panoche Road and Highway 33
Mendota, CA (July 6, 2022) – One person died, and several others suffered injuries following a traffic collision that occurred in the area of West Panoche Road and Highway 33.
According to Merced Sun-Star News, 32-year-old Alberto Rojas was driving a 2003 Nissan Sentra heading west on West Panoche Road. Earlier reports indicated Rojas approached the intersection at Highway 33 and stopped at a posted stop sign. When the man drove through the crossing, the Nissan collided with a 2001 Toyota Sienna heading south on SR-33. The force from the impact resulted in significant damage to both vehicles.
Shortly after 4:45 a.m., rescue teams arrived at the location. Responding paramedics rendered aid to all parties involved in the wreck.
1 Killed, Several Injured in Mendota Car Crash
The article published online mentioned a passenger in the Nissan, a 32-year-old woman, sadly died at the hospital. Meanwhile, rescue teams airlifted Alberto Rojas to Madera Community Regional Hospital for treatment of major injuries. Another passenger in the Nissan was also taken to Community Regional Hospital for treatment of major injuries. Two other passengers in the Nissan–a 26-year-old man, and a 43-year-old man, both sustained wounds and scratches; they received medical attention at the scene.
Authorities added the driver of the Toyota, 55-year-old Santos Valentin, sustained minor wounds and apparently refused first aid car. However, two passengers in the Toyota–a 59-year-old man and a 62-year-old man, suffered moderate injuries in the crash. Paramedics transferred the two injured parties to Community Regional Hospital in Fresno for further treatment.
The precise cause of the violent incident remained unclear. At this time, detectives continue to investigate exactly how and why the collision happened at West Panoche Road and Highway 33.
