Sean O’Brien, 60, Killed in Oakland Wrong-Way Crash on Interstate 80 and Interstate 580
OAKLAND, CA (September 7, 2021) – Sean O’Brien was killed after a wrong-way DUI hit-and-run crash on the Interstate 80 and Interstate 580 in Oakland.
The coroner’s office identified the 60-year-old Emeryville man as the victim of the fatal collision which occurred on Monday.
The incident began when Sean O’Brien was driving a Volkswagen Jetta on the eastbound Interstate 80 transition road to eastbound Interstate 580 in Oakland.
At the same time, a Chevrolet Impala was traveling the wrong-way in the area. CHP said the driver of the Chevrolet, 32-year-old Erik R. Steverson, then slammed into the Volkswagen.

The Jetta caught fire and ended up partially over a guard rail. The East Bay Times and KTVU News wrote that Sean O’Brien died at the scene of the Oakland crash.
The wreck took place on September 6 at about 1:12 a.m. Meanwhile, CHP affirmed that Erik Steverson left his car and fled on foot. They located him on the bike path below the freeway.
Paramedics took Erik Steverson to a hospital for treatment of head laceration and complaint of pain. Authorities soon arrested him on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence.
They booked him at Santa Rita Jail for hit-and-run causing death or injury and DUI lieu of a $400,000 bail. The Oakland wrong-way collision is still under investigation.
