Injured Teenage Boy, 16, Dies at Hospital after El Cajon Crash

EL CAJON, Calif. (Sept. 16, 2021) — A 16-year-old San Diego boy died Sept. 10th at the hospital, weeks after a collision in El Cajon that killed the driver and injured several others at Fletcher Parkway and Navajo Road.

The San Diego Medical Examiner identified the teenager on its website. The collision happened on Saturday, August 21stat the El Cajon intersection.

The teen who died was a 12th grade Grossmont High School student. The driver was traveling with three other teenage passengers in a black 2018 Honda Civic. The vehicle was eastbound on Navajo Road, traveling at a high rate of speed when it crashed about 2 a.m.. The vehicle struck a utility pole and became engulfed in flames. All four occupants were trapped in the vehicle. Bystanders called 911 for help. Meanwhile, the driver succumbed at the scene, but three others including the 16-year-old boy were seriously injured.

The San Diego boy and two others were all taken to hospitals. He was transported to Scripps Mercy Hospital Hillcrest. Then on August 29th, he was transported to Rady Children’s Hospital where his health continued to decline. Finally, on Sept. 10th, the teenager died at the hospital.

Investigators reported two of the three passengers in the car were 11th-grade students. One of them is not from the same school district as the others.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the El Cajon Police Department.
