Motorcyclist Killed in Vandenberg Space Force Base Crash on Highway 1
SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, CA (July 29, 2022) – A crash killed a motorcyclist on Highway 1 on the Vandenberg Space Force Base.
According to an article published by the Noozhawk News, the tragic accident took place on Thursday morning. Officers reported the wreck at about 7:40 a.m.
The incident happened on July 28 when a GMC Yukon was traveling north in the right-hand lane of northbound Highway 1 at 60-70 mph.
At the same time, the motorcycle rider was going south. For an unknown reason, the SUV drifted across the dirt center median and struck the motorcyclist head-on.
The Santa Maria man ended up ejected from his motorcycle and hit the GMC. The rider then went down an embankment off the highway on Vandenberg Space Force Base.
Natalia Mesa, 21, Seriously Injured in Wreck
His bike caught fire and in the process collided with a Lincoln Navigator. The California Highway Patrol said they crashed near San Antonio Road and Firefighter Road.
Firefighters arrived and soon pronounced the motorcyclist dead at the scene. His name has not been yet released pending notification of next of kin.
The 21-year-old driver of the GMC, Natalia Mesa, sustained major injuries as a result of the collision. Paramedics rushed the Santa Maria woman to the Marian Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Meanwhile, CHP added that Jeep Cherokee and a Subaru Legacy heading north obtained damage as they veered into the center median to avoid debris.
Officers forced Highway 1 to shut down between the Vandenberg Space Main Gate and the South Y following the crash. The cause of the fatal wreck is still under investigation.
