Hit-and-Run Driver Virgil Woods, 57, Kills Pedestrian in San Francisco Crash
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (May 21, 2021) – Authorities detained Virgil Woods after a fatal hit-and-run crash in San Francisco.
Police identified the 57-year-old San Francisco man as the suspect who killed a pedestrian and critically injured another on Tuesday evening.
The incident happened when Virgil Woods was driving a Chevy Avalanche more than 50 mph south on Polk Street, approaching Hayes Street.
At the same time, Lovisa Svallingson and a man were walking at the intersection of Polk and Hayes Streets. Police said Virgil Woods then ran a red light.
He slammed into a white Audi A6 that was going west on Hayes. CBS San Francisco and KTVU News wrote that his pickup truck ultimately hit the two pedestrians in the roadway.

Lovisa Svallingson, 29, died at the scene. Officers reported the accident on May 18 at around 7 p.m. near the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in the Civic Center area.
The other victim, a 28-year-old man, sustained life-threatening injuries as a result of the collision. Paramedics rushed him to the Zuckerberg-San Francisco General Hospital in critical condition.
Meanwhile, police affirmed that Woods abandoned his car and fled on foot. He discarded pieces of clothing to hide and filed a false police report.
Officials found him with several glass pipes used to ingest narcotics. They arrested him on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, two counts of felony hit-and-run, multiple counts of reckless driving.
Authorities also charged him with failure to stop at a red light, filing a false police report, destruction of evidence and possession of drug paraphernalia.
They soon held him in the San Francisco County Jail. The San Francisco hit-and-run crash is still under investigation.
