Man Killed in Vista Crash on State Route 78 Near Emerald Drive
VISTA, CA (February 26, 2023) – A DUI crash killed a man on State Route 78 near South Emerald Drive in Vista.
According to The San Diego Union Tribune and CBS 8 News, the tragic accident took place on Sunday morning. Officers reported the collision on February 26 at around 10:20 a.m.
The incident began when a Chevrolet HHR became disabled in the center median on eastbound State Route 78, just east of Emerald Drive, in Vista.
The male driver of the Chevrolet exited and tried to change its tire when at the same time, a Buick Verano approached in the fast lane. In the process, the Buick slammed into the stopped car.
Drunk Driver Hits Pedestrian
The California Highway Patrol said the Verano then hit the man standing outside his vehicle. Firefighters along with the paramedics arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene.
The name of the deceased victim has not been yet released pending notification of next of kin. The female driver of the Buick sustained moderate injuries as a result of the wreck.
Medical personnel rushed her to a hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, CHP determined that the woman was under the influence of alcohol when she hit the pedestrian.
They soon arrested her for DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter. Officers forced the eastbound side of State Route 78 to shut down for a time near Emerald following the incident.
The cause of the fatal Vista crash is still under investigation. Anyone with information can call the CHP at (760) 643-3400.
