Wayne Berry, 68, Killed in Willits Bypass Head-On Crash on Highway 101
WILLITS, CA (May 13, 2021) – Motorcyclist Wayne Berry was killed after a DUI crash on Highway 101 on the elevated Willits Bypass.
The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office identified the 68-year-old Arroyo Grande man as the victim of the fatal accident on Thursday.
The incident happened when Wayne A. Berry was riding a 2007 BMW motorcycle south on Highway 101 in Willits. At the same time, a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix was going north.
The Pontiac then crossed over the double yellow lines and into oncoming traffic while on the elevated Willits Bypass. The car went directly into the path of the motorcyclist.
Motorcyclist Hit by DUI Driver Near Main Street
The California Highway Patrol said the two collided head-on, south of Main Street. The crash sent Wayne Berry and his motorcycle over the side of the elevated highway.
Firefighters along with the paramedics arrived and pronounced the rider dead at the scene. The Press Democrat and Ukiah Daily Journal wrote that the wreck occurred shortly before 3 a.m.
Meanwhile, the Pontiac caught fire as a result of the collision. CHP determined that the male driver of the Grand Prix was under the influence of a controlled substance when the accident took place.
Medical personnel took him to a hospital for treatment of minor wounds. Authorities soon arrested the motorist on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter.
CHP forced the highway to shut down for about two hours following the wreck. The Willits DUI crash is still under investigation.
