Coroner Identifies 3 Killed in Newport Beach Crash
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (May 13, 2022) — Wayne Swanson Jr., Andrew James Chaves, and Crystal McCallum, died Thursday morning in a crash on Pacific Coast Highway in Newport Beach.
The deadly crash occurred when a Tesla Model S crashed into parked construction equipment along PCH on the Mariners Mile strip, according to the Orange County Register. It’s unknown what led up to the crash or who was driving at this time. However, the car reportedly struck a curb and then crashed into the equipment on the opposite side of the street.
All three people inside the Tesla died at the scene and the vehicle was totaled.
Meanwhile, three construction workers in the area were injured in the crash.
The people who died were later identified as Crystal M. McCallum, 34, of Texas; and Andrew James Chaves, 32, of Arizona; and finally, Wayne Walter Swanson Jr., 40, of Newport Coast. The relationship between the three people is unknown at this time.
The injuries suffered by the construction workers were not considered life-threatening.
The crash remains under investigation.
