Two Killed in Small Plane Crash at Torrance Airport
TORRANCE, Calif. (Nov. 30, 2022) — A fatal Torrance airport plane crash left two people dead Wednesday after the aircraft crash near a runway at the Zamperini Field.
The plane crash occurred about 11 a.m. on Nov. 30th at the Torrance Municipal Airport, according to KTLA News.
Douglas Happ, 81, of Redondo Beach, and Gregg Low, 59, of Torrance, were identified by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office as the two people aboard the aircraft. Happ, a retired pilot and Vietnam veteran, owned the 2011 Arion Lightning, according to the Los Angeles Times. However, it’s unknown who was the pilot at this time.
Torrance police and firefighters responded and located a single-engine Arion Lightning aircraft that had crashed as its pilot attempting to land the plane. Records indicate the pilot was practicing touch and go landings and take offs at the time of the collision. Gregg Low is reportedly a friend of Douglas Happ and was considering buying the plane. The two were flying around the airport for roughly 18 minutes prior to the collision.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are heading up an investigation.
