Clara Howells, 1, Francis Catano, 22, Angeles Escoto, 19, Killed in 4-Vehicle Crash
MODESTO, Calif. (April 26, 2024) — Patricia Lopez and her one-year-old grandchild Clara Howells were among four people who died in a multi-vehicle crash on McHenry Avenue, just north of Hogue Road in Del Rio.
Angeles Escoto, 19, and Francis Catano, 22, both of Merced, also died in the traffic accident, the Oakdale Leader reported.
The collision, which involved four motorists, happened at about 4 pm on Tuesday, April 9th, according to the California Highway Patrol and ABC 30 News.
Authorities reported a 19-year-old Merced woman was driving a Mitsubishi northbound on McHenry Avenue when she swerved into oncoming vehicles. The car collided head-on with a Toyota SUV and two other vehicles.
Both the teen driver and her 22-year-old passenger both died at the scene. Meanwhile, Patricia Lopez, 60, of Linden, who was driving the Toyota, along with her one-year-old grandchild, Clara Howells of Turlock, were both transported to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. They both died from their injuries at the hospital.
Also, the 26-year-old Escalon man driving a 2001 Ford also collided with both the Mitsubishi and the Toyota and a 54-year-old Modesto man driving a 2014 Dodge van hit the Mitsubishi. They were not injured in the crash.
Investigators are working to determine liability for the collision.
