Fatal Wrong-Way Crash on I-5 Freeway in San Ysidro
SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. (June 4, 2021) — Three people died in a San Ysidro wrong-way crash on the 5 Freeway today.
The traffic accident happened about 10:25 a.m. on Friday, June 4th near State Route 905, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A driver in a Honda Civic was reportedly speeding northbound in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 Freeway prior to colliding with an oncoming Ford occupied by two San Diego police officers.
San Ysidro Crash Wrong Way Driver and 2 Police Officers Killed
The report indicated that one of the vehicles involved caught fire during the crash. Firefighters responded and used the Jaws of Life to pull the victims from the vehicles, but all three were pronounced dead on scene.
There were two people in the second vehicle who died. Additionally, the wrong-way driver also died in the crash.
Police closed down all lanes of the I-5 Freeway at SR 905 to investigate the wrong-way San Ysidro crash.
