2 Killed in National City Pedestrian Accident
NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (Oct. 20, 2021) – Michelle Monique Ibarra, 26, of San Diego, is one of two pedestrians killed Sunday as they attempted to run across the Interstate 805 Freeway after a collision in National City.
The initial two-vehicle crash happened about 8:25 p.m. on the northbound 805 Freeway at East 18th Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The driver of a gray Toyota XA crashed into a white Honda Civic, but there were no injuries. However, the two occupants of the Toyota including Michelle Ibarra and River Israel Altamirano, both jumped over the center median wall before running across the southbound lanes of the freeway. That’s when a Chevrolet Silverado struck the woman and the a Mazda sedan struck the man, CHP officials said. Sadly, both pedestrians died shortly after the crash, just south of East Plaza Boulevard.
The CHP is heading up the investigation into the liability for the crash.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office identified both victims on their website.
