PITTSBURG, Calif. (Dec. 14, 2022) — A fatal head-on crash happened Tuesday morning on Highway 4 in Pittsburg, leading to the arrest of one driver.
The deadly, 4-vehicle crash occurred about 11:05 a.m. on Dec. 13th at the Railroad Avenue exit, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP officials reported a driver in a Dodge Durango was heading west in the eastbound lanes of Highway 4. The vehicle crashed head-on into a Honda Accord and that vehicle collided with a Toyota Highlander and a tanker truck, police said.
The driver in the Honda suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. A passenger from the same vehicle suffered major injuries and was hospitalized. Additionally, the driver from the Toyota and an Infant from the car were taken to a hospital as a precaution. There were no injuries reported from the tanker truck.
Meanwhile, the driver from the Dodge exited his vehicle and fled on foot.
Contra Costa Sheriff’s deputies eventually located the suspect and arrested the person on suspicion of driving under the influence, the CHP said. Also, the suspect was treated at the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
Traffic lanes eventually reopened at 2:30 p.m.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
