APPLE VALLEY, Calif. (July 5, 2022) —  A 12-year-old boy died while riding an ATV in a collision with a hit-and-run driver on Stoddard Wells Road in Apple Valley, California.

The two-vehicle off-road vehicle collision occurred about 8:59 p.m. on Saturday, July 2nd, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Authorities are searching for a hit-and-run driver that killed the boy and sent an 11-year-old girl riding with him to the hospital where she is in critical condition.

A bystander located two unconscious juveniles on Stoddard Wells Road in the Stoddard Wells Off-Highway Vehicle Area, police officials said.

Apple Valley Hit-and-Run Crash

The two juveniles were riding a 2019 TaoTao ATV on Stoddard Wells Road in a northeasterly direction.

Meanwhile, a driver on a 2021 Razor Turbo S or S4 in a Velocity Orange Madness coloration was heading eastbound on Stoddard Wells Road.

The driver in the Side-by-Side reportedly collided with the TaoTao, just east of Central Road. However, the motorist fled the scene without stopping to help the juveniles. Police say a witness saw the suspect on the side-by-side turn off its lights as it drove away.

Despite efforts to save the boy, he was pronounced deceased on scene. However, paramedics took the 11-year-old girl by ambulance to St. Mary’s Hospital. Later, they airlifted her to Loma Linda University Medical Center for further care and she remains in critical condition.

There are GoFundMe sites for both the boy and the girl.

Police officials conducted an extensive search of the area in an effort to find the driver on the Side-by-Side UTV, but they were unsuccessful.

The California Highway Patrol is actively investigating this crash.
