2 Killed, 1 Injured on 71 Freeway
CHINO, Calif. (May 7, 2024) — Two Caltrans workers died after they were struck by a box truck Monday on the northbound 71 Freeway near South Euclid Avenue in the Butterfield Ranch area of Chino.
A third Caltrans worker was treated for minor injuries after the traffic accident at around 8:37 a.m. on Monday, May 6th, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The Caltrans crew of seven people were working on the shoulder of the freeway when the white box truck side-swiped their parked work van occupied by two more workers. The box truck continued traveling north and went through a guard rail before hitting two Caltrans workers. The workers were standing on the shoulder along with five others and cleaning the embankment near the guardrail.
Paramedics responded and pronounced one of the workers dead at the scene and transported the other to a hospital where they died.
Meanwhile, a third Caltrans worker who was in the van was treated for minor injuries.
The box truck driver cooperated with the investigation and there are no criminal charges at this time, but the case remains under investigation.
