CASTRO VALLEY, Calif. (Sept. 16, 2022) — A driver crashed into a Castro Valley Trader Joe’s grocery store on Redwood Road, leaving eight people including a child with injuries.

The collision occurred about 3:45 p.m. on Sept. 15th, at 22224 Redwood Road, according to the California Highway Patrol and KRON4.

Authorities say an 88-year-old man driving a 2005 Toyota Avalon accidentally drove through the store entrance and crashed into people at the checkout lanes. The vehicle came to a stop roughly 50 feet into the store.

Paramedics with the Alameda County Fire Department responded to help those hurt in the crash. They transported four people including a 5-year-old child and one employee to a hospital for treatment of “mild to moderate” injuries.  Four others were treated at the scene for undisclosed mild injuries.

Some of the injured were hit by the vehicle and others were hit by the debris from the crash.

Investigators working on the case do not suspect drugs or alcohol are factors.

The crash remains under investigation.
