Deadly Crash on State Route Highway 46 in Cholame
CHOLAME, Calif. (Jan. 31, 2022) — A Cholame fatal crash on Highway 46 left one person dead and three others injured Monday afternoon in a multi-vehicle pileup, just south of Jack’s Ranch Cafe and the Cholame “Y” intersection.
Police closed down the highway in both directions following the 12: 07 p.m. head-on crash on the eastbound side of State Route 46 between four motorists, according to California Highway Patrol.
The drivers of a black Dodge Ram pickup truck, a gray Jeep Cherokee, a white Toyota RAV 4 and a Yukon collided. The maroon GMC Yukon SUV reportedly overturned in the collision. The initial head-on crash happened between the Ram and Yukon.
The collision left one person dead and another suffered major injuries. Two other people had minor injuries.
CAL FIRE San Luis Obispo confirmed traffic is backed up for several miles in both directions. Authorities closed down the roadway at Bitterwater Road. Three tow trucks removed the most damaged vehicles from the scene.
By 2:54 p.m., police reopened the roadway in both directions to traffic.
The investigation into liability is undereway.
