Selma Man, 58, Struck and Killed by Suspected DUI Driver
FRESNO, Calif. (April 26, 2022) — Pedestrian, Daryl Bagwell, 58, of Selma, died and a suspected drunken driver was arrested after car accident on Rose Avenue in Fresno.
The deadly pedestrian hit-and-run crash happened about 10:30 p.m. on Friday, April 22nd, according to a press release by the Fresno County Sheriff Coroner.
The Selma man was walking westbound on Rose Avenue in a traffic lane near Selma. At the same time, Epigmeneo Cortez-Pedro, 57, was driving a Nissan Versa eastbound on Rose Avenue at an undetermined speed, police said.
The motorist reportedly allowed his vehicle to enter the westbound lane, directly into the path of the pedestrian, police said in a press release. Epigmeneo Cortez-Pedro was unable to steer away from the direction of the pedestrian due to his alleged intoxication at the time. The front of the Nissan struck the victim in the westbound lane. Daryl Bagwell suffered critical injuries in the crash. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
The suspected drunk driver did not stop and help the dying man. Instead, he left the scene of the traffic accident.
Suspected Hit-and-run, DUI Driver Arrested
Meanwhile, a Fresno County Sheriff Deputy arrived on scene. The police officer observed a fluid trail leading away from the crash scene in a westerly direction. The deputy also found the Nissan’s front bumper and license plate at the scene. During a search of the area, the deputy located the suspect’s vehicle behind a residence a quarter mile from the scene.
CHP officers also located the suspect at his residence and conducted a hit and run investigation.
A short time later, they arrested Cortez-Pedro and booked him into the Fresno County Jail. He is being held in lieu of $147,000 bail. His charges include: felony driving under the influence with .08% alcohol, felony gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, felony Hit-and-Run resulting in death, intoxicated driver causing injury/death to someone other than self.
