SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, Calif. (Dec. 14, 2022) – A fatal rollover bus crash on the Interstate 15 Freeway, just south of Rasor Road in unincorporated Barstow, San Bernardino County.
A bus capable of carrying more than 50 people crashed about 11:32 p.m. near mile marker 126 on Dec. 13th, according to a California Highway Patrol dispatch.
Some of the occupants managed to get out of the bus on their own and were walking in traffic lanes, police said.
However, one person died at the scene of the crash, at least seven others suffered major injuries and there were several others with minor injuries including one with a facial injury, Victor Valley News Group reports. Five of the critically injured were transported to trauma centers by helicopters and several ambulances took the others to hospitals. The total number of injured and the number of people aboard the bus is unknown at this time.
The San Bernardino County Fire Department sent medical crews to the scene where they located the bus on its wheels on the right shoulder of the freeway.
The crash was declared a mass casualty incident because healthcare workers were outnumbered by patients.
Police issued a SigAlert about 12:49 a.m. due to the full closure of the southbound lanes of the Interstate 15 Freeway. By 2 a.m., only the No. lane remained closed to traffic.
Investigators are working to determine what led up to the bus collision.
