MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (May 23, 2023) — Two people died Tuesday in a fatal multi-vehicle crash on Highway 1, just south of Molera Road near Castroville in Monterey County.
The head-on crash occurred around 12:37 p.m. on May 23rd, according to KION 46 and the California Highway Patrol.
A driver in a black pickup truck reportedly crossed over into opposing traffic and collided with a Mazda CX5 and the vehicles also collided with a black Hyundai Accent or Honda Accord, the CHP report said.
Two people died in the crash and there were also injuries. There are no further details about the victims who died, nor what vehicle they were in. Tow trucks removed at least two of the vehicles from the roadway.
Meanwhile, Caltrans diverted motorists traveling on southbound Highway 1 onto Molera Road. The northbound lanes remained open to traffic.
Investigators are working on the case to determine what caused the fatal Highway 1 crash.
