MENIFEE, Calif. (Feb. 2, 2023) — Mauricio Mendez, 28, died in a head-on Menifee accident involving a Riverside Transit Agency bus at Ethanac Road and Matthews Road.
The deadly crash occurred about 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 1st, according to the San Bernardino Sun.
The Chico man was driving a Ford Mustang westbound on Matthews Road. Witnesses told authorities he was allegedly weaving in-and-out of traffic lanes prior to reaching the Menifee intersection. The car reportedly moved into eastbound traffic directly in front of the RTA bus occupied by an unknown number of passengers, the report said. The bus driver told authorities they were unable to avoid the crash and the vehicle struck the Mustang head-on.
Mauricio Mendez suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene, according to the Riverside County Fire Department. There were no other passengers in the Mustang.
However, several people aboard the transit bus suffered minor to moderate injuries and were treated by paramedics on scene and some were transported to a trauma center.
The Menifee Police Department is heading up the investigation into the fatal Menifee bus accident.
