One Killed in Car Accident on Highway 101 in Sunnyvale
SUNNYVALE, Calif. (May 6, 2024) — A woman in her 50s died in a pedestrian accident Sunday morning on Highway 101 near Mathilda Avenue in Sunnyvale.
The deadly collision followed an earlier crash and happened at around 1:27 a.m. on May 5th, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Prior to the deadly pedestrian accident, the victim was driving a gray Honda Civic that rear-ended a white Nissan Xterra. Both of those drivers pulled over to the center divider and the woman driving the Honda exited her vehicle. She was reportedly walking in traffic lanes when the oncoming Mazda CX-5 struck her on the freeway.
The victim’s identity were not released, pending notification of their relatives. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release her name.
Investigators working on the case arrested the Mazda driver on DUI charges. The 23-year-old San Jose woman, but have not identified her at this time.
Tow trucks removed the vehicles due to moderate damage.
Police closed down several southbound lanes of Highway 101 to investigate the crash scene and will determine fault.
