Cameron Patterson, 18, Killed, 3 Injured
FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (March 23, 2023) — Cameron Patterson, 18, died in a solo car crash into a canal Wednesday night at Herndon Avenue and Madsen Avenue in Fresno County.
The teenager was among four young people ages 17 to 19 years old in the vehicle when it crashed, just east of Clovis.
The accident occurred around 6:15 p.m. on March 22nd at the Fresno County intersection and wound up in the Friant-Kern Canal, ABC 30 News reports.
Marcos Zuniga II, 18, was driving the vehicle and allegedly speeding in wet conditions when he lost control at the curve in the roadway and crashed into the canal, the California Highway Patrol said.
The driver and two of the passengers managed to free themselves from the vehicle and swim to safety, but Patterson was trapped and died at the scene. Two of the survivors were taken to a hospital for treatment of undisclosed injuries.
Meanwhile, members of the swift water rescue teams with the Fresno City Fire Department and Fresno County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team conducted a search for the fourth passenger.
It wasn’t until the vehicle was pulled out of the water that authorities found the victim still inside.
Investigators do not suspect drugs or alcohol are factors, but it’s unknown if there will be any criminal charges filed at the conclusion of the investigation.
