Bicycle Rider Killed in Escondido Crash on SR-78
Escondido, Calif. (August 23, 2021) – Jerry Eugene Torres, 53, of Escondido, died Saturday night when a driver struck his bicycle while riding on State Route 78 in Escondido.
The Escondido man was riding his bicycle in the westbound lanes of SR-78 near Centre City Parkway, according to initial reports from California Highway Patrol.
Torres was riding near the center divider. He attempted to cross traffic lanes to the right shoulder. That’s when he was struck by a white Volvo sedan traveling at approximately 55 to 60 mph in the number one lane.
Someone called 911 for help and police and paramedics responded. The bicycle rider suffered fatal traumatic injuries and died at the scene.

Investigators remained at the scene to investigate the cause of the crash and liability.
On Monday, the San Diego Medical Examiner released the name of the victim as Jerry Eugene Torres.
