Pedestrian Killed in Tulare County Hit-and-run Crash
TULARE COUNTY, Calif. (Nov. 14, 2022) — Jimmy Slate Jr., 30, died in a hit-and-run pedestrian accident Saturday afternoon on Avenue 144, just south of Avenue 313 in Visalia, Tulare County.
The suspect driving a 2012 Mazda allegedly fled after she struck the victim as he walked his bicycle along McAuliff Road/Avenue 144. Authorities later identified her as 31-year-old Shay Dejonge. Now ABC 30 News reports she turned herself in at the police station on Wednesday.
The deadly crash occurred about 1 p.m. crash on Saturday, Nov. 5th, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Paramedics responded and transported the injured man to Kaweah Health Medical Center, but he died a few days before his 31st birthday, ABC News said. Meanwhile, the woman allegedly driving the Mazda continued driving without stopping to help the man.
Witnesses reported seeing a female driver with blonde hair and authorities matched her description to the owner of the Mazda involved in the crash. Police located the vehicle in front of Shay Dejonge’s home and knocked on the door, but she apparently fled on foot. After she turned herself in on Wednesday, authorities booked her into the Tulare County Pretrial facility. She is charged with felony hit-and-run causing death. Her court arraignment is set for November 14th.
Investigators continue to work on the case and the Mazda was stored for evidence.
