4-Time Repeat Drunk Driver Faces Vehicular Homicide Charges
ORANGE, Calif. (March 12, 2024) – Jonathan Lopez, 31, of Orange, was arrested on suspicion of DUI following a fatal hit-and-run pedestrian collision on North Tustin Avenue in Orange.
The deadly collision occurred at around 11:20 a.m. on Tuesday, March 12th, according to the Orange Police Department and the Orange County Register.
The suspect was driving northbound in a silver Toyota sedan when he allegedly struck the victim as he was crossing the street outside of a crosswalk, police said.
The unidentified pedestrian sustained major injuries and died at the scene, however, the driver who hit him fled without stopping to help him.
Investigators with the Orange Police Department responded and put out a notice to officers in the area. Roughly ten minutes after the crash, a detective spotted the suspect’s vehicle with major front-end damage and a smashed windshield traveling north on Glassell Street at Katella Avenue. The suspect led police on a pursuit, but they eventually stopped him at Tustin Street near Adams Avenue.
Jonathan Lopez, who has four previous DUI convictions, appeared to be intoxicated. He has been arrested on multiple charges including driving under the influence, hit and run, vehicular homicide and for leading police on a brief chase.
The investigation into the collision is ongoing and authorities are awaiting a blood test. Witnesses are asked to contact Officer Ivans at 714-744-7451.
