Deadly Crash at Elm and North Avenues in Fresno County
FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (May 25, 2022) — Jose Caratachea-Valencia, 52, of Selma, died in a crash with a semi-truck Monday morning on Elm Avenue, south of North Avenue in Fresno County.
The two-vehicle collision occurred about 2:45 a.m. on May 23, according to the Fresno CHP.
The collision involved a 2010 Mercury Grand Marquis and a semi-tractor trailer truck, police said.
Jose Caratachea-Valencia was driving a Mercury northbound on Elm Avenue at speeds estimated near 100 mph. As the vehicle approached North Avenue, the car reportedly collided with a truck that was entering northbound Elm Avenue from a private driveway. The truck was on the east side of the roadway, south of North Avenue.
Police believe that the unsafe speed of the Mercury made it impossible for the driver to stop before colliding into the trailer of the truck.
As a result, the motorist in the Mercury suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The truck driver did not report any injuries on scene.
Authorities closed down Elm Avenue to conduct the investigation.
Investigators believe that alcohol was a factor in the collision, but it is not confirmed at this time. They will also determine fault for the crash.
