Man Riding Horse Struck, Killed in Car Accident
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (March 19, 2024) — A driver in a pickup struck and killed Jose Gelacio Mondragon Hernandez, 46, of Bakersfield, while he was riding a horse Saturday night on South Sterling Road in Bakersfield.
The deadly crash occurred at around 11:35 p.m. on March 16th, at Alto Place, according to the Kern County Coroner’s Office who identified the victim.

The pickup truck driver was traveling southbound on South Sterling Street when he hit the victim and his horse in the 1300 block of the street, Bakersfield Now reports.
The Bakersfield Police Department responded to the scene of the crash between the truck and the man who had been riding a horse. The man was thrown off the horse and died in the roadway.
Meanwhile, the horse was also down in the street suffering from major injuries. A veterinarian responded and euthanized the horse at the scene due to its severe injuries.
The pickup truck driver stropped and cooperated with the investigation. It’s unknown if speed or distracted driving was a factor in the case at this time.
