Man, 73, Riding Bicycle Killed in Crash
Murrieta, Calif., (April 25, 2023) — Joseph Binter, 73, died in a collision with an SUV Sunday night while riding a bicycle on Whitewood Road in Murrieta.
The fatal crash occurred at 7:50 p.m. on April 23rd, according to the Murrieta Police Department.
The police department’s Communication Center received a report about a traffic collision involving the cyclist and a Chevrolet SUV on Whitewood Road, just north of Poinsettia Street.
Murrieta police and fire rescue crews responded and located the unresponsive cyclist. The man was not breathing and died at the scene.
Meanwhile, the 37-year-old woman who was driving the SUV was standing nearby.
Bicycle Rider Killed in Accident on Whitewood Road
Police learned the driver of the SUV was heading north on Whitewood Road and pulled to the curb and stopped the vehicle. She reportedly exited the SUV and reached into the back seat to tend to her child, police said. Witnesses stated that Joseph Binter was also traveling northbound on Whitewood Road and after riding past the intersection at Poinsettia Street, he allegedly hit the back of the parked SUV.
The Murrieta Police Department’s Traffic Bureau will continue to work on the case to determine the cause of the collision and liability. Several questions remain such as whether the SUV had it’s lights on, was the location of the accident well lit and did the SUV pull in front of the cyclist? Also, the location where the crash took place or anywhere to stop.
