Man, 33, Struck, Killed on 5 Freeway is ID’d
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (April 2, 2024) — Joseph Robert Held Lyons, 33, died in a pedestrian accident on the Interstate 5 Freeway near state Route 163 and Balboa Park in San Diego.
The deadly crash occurred on St. Patrick’s Day at around 5:26 a.m. on March 17th, according to the San Diego Medical Examiner’s Office.
Authorities reported the 33-year-old man was struck and killed by a vehicle while walking across the I-5 freeway towards state Route 163 near Balboa Park.
Witnesses called 911 to report the victim as he was seen walking in the center divide area as well as the fast lane on state Route 163.
CHP officials reportedly set up a traffic break in the area, but it was too late as a vehicle struck the man and he sustained fatal injuries. He was located down in traffic lanes on the I-5 Freeway at the transition to SR-163.
